Dhanush was born on July 28, 1983 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, as Venkatesh Prabhu Kasthuri Raja. His family is film oriented, with his father, a famous Tamil film director and producer, called Kasthuri Raja. First, Dhanush did not intend to venture into the film industry and wanted to become a hotelier. He was however encouraged by his brother, Selvaraghavan, to venture into acting.
Although he was criticized at the beginning of his career due to his unusual appearance and thin body, Dhanush managed to prove his critics wrong with the help of his regular performances and his commitment to his profession.

Dhanush began his acting career with the Tamil film Thulluvadho Ilamai (2002) directed by his father. The movie was a commercial hit and a new star was born in him.
